The wholesale textile market of Amritsar remained closed following a call for observing an indefinite strike given by the textile traders’ association against GST. On the call of the Federation of Textile Traders of Amritsar (FTTA), many wholesale cloth markets like Shastri market, Cash Dhara bazaar and areas around these markets were closed.
FTTA president Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia said the newly introduced tax would severely hit micro and small traders. He said he would not be surprised in case they vanished gradually.
He said the spate of taxes on the textile sector would turn the readymade and other garments into the costly goods category. A trader said textile was next to agriculture in providing employment in the country. He said introducing multiple taxes on the sector would mean laying off of thousands of people.
The woolen textile units of Amritsar manufacture shawls, blankets etc.

Along with a marvellous collection of saris and fabrics, the market also has several shops selling pashminas, spectacular beaded dresses, well-designed men’s wedding suits, and attractively boxed shirt-and-tie sets. Very attractive and exclusive woodwork jewelry and handicrafts are also found here.
Amritsar, Ludhiana and Panipat are strongholds in their respective areas of knitting, hosiery and carpets and industrial yarns.
