Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) completes 20 years

From 33 designers in 2000 to a prestigious platform now showcasing over 200 labels, LFW has grown from strength to strength with each season. Designers, talent, hair and makeup artists, sponsors, showstoppers, all have played a role in making this platform what it is today.

Lakmé Fashion Week has earned renown as one of India’s most prestigious fashion shows that takes place twice a year, with the summer/resort show in the early months of the year, and the winter/festive show in August. Run through a collaborative effort between cosmetic brand Lakmé and IMG Reliance, which has made a name for itself in entertainment marketing and management, the fashion show was conceived to allow Indian fashion to gain a foothold in the global fashion scene.

LFW began as Lakmé India Fashion Week in 1999. LFW’s Gen Next program has launched a number of prominent designers. Gen Next is an opportunity for young talent to be mentored by renowned Indian designers and find their way into the international arena. The emerging designers category of the event is another platform for new designers. Film stars have often walked the ramp during the Lakmé Fashion Week.
