Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra are the two-pronged creative force behind the eponymous couture label. The couturiers want to shatter preconceived notions attached to Indian couture. One is that Indian fashion is mainly about handcrafts and embroidery. The duo instead showcase sartorial finesse, voluminous drapes and minimalism. They have represented what modern Indian couture stands for through their autumn/winter 2018 collection called Independence.
Last year’s autumn/winter 2017 collection was called The Regiment. It represented vintage India with military sensibilities, thereby bringing the duo’s anti-trend brand philosophy to prominence in the western world. Recent digital developments on the social media are beginning to spark a change in preconceived notions about Indian couture.
The Shantanu and Nikhil flagship store in a Mumbai suburb has been constructed as a luxurious, state-of-the-art space where consumers can be inducted into the S&N #IndiaStory. The designers’ take on couture is based on telling stories of the past amid the glorious modernity of the present and that is replicated in their latest venture.
