On July 9, 2025, Fashion Day, over 50 prominent Indian fashion designers made a compassionate commitment to ban feathers from their collections, a move spearheaded by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and British designer Stella McCartney.
Signifying a crucial step towards eradicating the cruelty birds endure in the feather trade, this initiative demonstrates the significance of ethical considerations to style.
This pledge garnered support from renowned designers such as Anita Dongre, Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, Gaurav Gupta, Rina Dhaka, and Jade by Monica and Karishma, among many others.
The commitment extends to various labels within the Indian design community, including Baggit, Virgio, Zouk, and Pia’s Faux, showcasing a widespread embrace of cruelty-free fashion.
Designers voiced their strong convictions behind this decision. Gupta emphasized, signing this pledge is a natural extension of his brand’s cruelty-free philosophy - where beauty is never created at the cost of another life. Veteran designer Ashish N Soni, echoed, stating, he signed this pledge not because it’s politically correct but because it’s something he truly believes in. This feather-free movement isn't limited to India; designers and brands worldwide, including Stella McCartney, are actively embracing alternatives. Innovators are now creating vegan feathers from sustainable materials such as bamboo fibers, recycled polyester, and metallic textiles. These alternatives offer the same luxurious aesthetic without causing harm to animals, proving that ethical fashion can be equally beautiful and innovative.
Commending the designers, Ashima Kukreja, Director-Corporate Affairs, PETA India, highlighted, this growing movement among Indian designers marks a new era of conscious couture, where creativity flourishes without exploiting animals.
