Uniqlo to expand India sourcing for supply to global stores

Piyush Goyal, Union Commerce and Industry Minister announced major Japanese apparel conglomerates, spearheaded by casual wear giant Uniqlo, intend to amplify their manufacturing investments and material procurement across India. Following high-level strategic dialogues in Tokyo with Tadashi Yanai, Chairman and CEO, Fast Retailing discussions centered on integrating Indian manufacturing units into international supply networks. Industry data indicates,  hile Japan represents the world's fourth-largest garment import market valued at approximately $23 billion, India currently commands only a modest one per cent share. Bridging this discrepancy requires local fabric mills and garment exporters to meticulously adapt to specialized Japanese standards concerning material weights, precise sizing parameters, and rigorous quality controls.

Navigating export realities and growth opportunities

Historical trade barriers largely stemmed from Indian exporters tailoring production lines primarily for Western markets in Europe and the United States rather than aligning with nuanced Japanese specifications. Addressing this operational challenge, specialized delegations from the Apparel Export Promotion Council are actively engaging Japanese buyers to decode exact consumer preferences. My meetings with some of the largest importers give me the confidence that we will see a larger presence in India, both as investment to expand local retail and to source for roughly 4,000 stores worldwide, stated Piyush Goyal. Concurrently, government initiatives like the PM MITRA scheme aim to upgrade domestic infrastructure, empowering Indian manufacturers to capture higher-margin export segments and service international retail demands effectively.

Emphasizing functional everyday wear

Owned by Fast Retailing, Uniqlo designs, manufactures, and retails casual apparel emphasizing functional everyday wear. Operating over 4,000 global stores, the brand entered India in October 2019, scaling past 20 outlets while achieving domestic profitability within three years, backed by sustained international expansion.
