Projected to reach $17.4 billion by 2034 with a consistent 4.9 per cent growth rate, the Indian children’s apparel market is witnessing a transition toward ‘educational fashion.’ Capitalizing on this trajectory, Kolkata-based Shubha Design Studio has launched its dedicated vertical, Laadla Laadli. India. This strategic move addresses a critical gap in the premium segment: the demand for apparel that functions as both skin-friendly wear and a medium for cultural storytelling. While 95 per cent of the sector historically focused on aesthetic mimicry of adult styles, this initiative integrates Indian mythology and traditional art forms into interactive, digital-first collections designed for children aged 3 to 12.
Bridging heritage and technology through design
The venture marks a multidisciplinary collaboration between founders Shubha Mitra and Punam Mullick and Pravitha Nair, an IT engineer and Kathak dancer. This partnership emphasizes a structural shift toward ‘meaningful consumption,’ where garments serve as conversation starters. By utilizing 120-150 GSM breathable natural fabrics - optimized for the Indian climate - the brand mitigates the common industry challenge of poor fabric breathability in synthetic mass-market alternatives. The long-term roadmap includes immersive offline spaces where fashion intersects with music and art, positioning the brand to capture the high-ROI ‘phygital’ retail trend currently dominating urban consumer behavior in 2026.
Launched in April 2026, Laadla Laadli. India specializes in sustainable kidswear that blends Indian heritage with global aesthetics. Initially a digital-first platform, it targets eco-conscious, urban parents seeking high-quality, story-driven apparel. The brand aims to scale through immersive cultural hubs, bolstering Shubha Design Studio’s established five-year presence in the sustainable fashion sector.
