India apparel retail revenue to grow 12-13% in FY27

India's organized apparel retail sector is tracking toward a healthy revenue growth of 12 to 13 per cent for FY27 fiscal year, moderating slightly from the 15 per cent expansion recorded in the previous period. According to a comprehensive analysis by Crisil Ratings covering 41 major industry operators, the normalization reflects a broader consumer trend of diversifying discretionary spending toward categories outside of clothing. However, robust volume uptake in value fashion and fast-fashion segments - largely priced under Rs 2,500 - continues to anchor high single-digit momentum across domestic markets. Value fashion has emerged as the key growth driver for organized retailers, noted Anuj Sethi, Senior Director, Crisil Ratings, highlighting how rising aspirational consumption in tier-II and tier-III urban clusters keeps retail pipelines active.

Margin pressures test retailer profitability frameworks

Despite favorable top-line projections, apparel merchants face distinct cost headwinds as rising raw material expenses, particularly for cotton, coincide with elevated operating overheads. Intense market competition restricts brands from passing total cost increases onto price-sensitive shoppers, pushing expected operating margins down by approximately 100 basis points to 14 per cent. Furthermore, physical store productivity remains subdued with revenue per square foot hovering flat near Rs 11,000. Consequently, executives are prioritizing disciplined capital expenditure around Rs 2,500 crore, utilizing tighter inventory replenishment cycles to protect balance sheets while banking on upcoming festive sales to secure annual targets.

Organized apparel retail sector profile

India's organized apparel retail sector comprises branded brick-and-mortar store networks, specialized chains, and omnichannel fashion platforms. Driven by rapid expansion into smaller emerging cities, the industry focuses on mass-market penetration, value-driven lifestyle collections, and scalable inventory models to maintain long-term financial stability across domestic consumer markets.
