Massive! The DRDO has handed over the technology for an extreme cold apparel system to five Indian companies

In New Delhi, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) handed over technology for an indigenous extreme cold weather clothing system (ECWS). According to DRDO, the Indian Army requires the severe ECWS for long-term operations on glaciers and Himalayan peaks.
Until recently, the Army had been importing extreme cold weather equipment as well as a variety of Special Clothing and Mountaineering Equipment (SCME) goods for troops stationed at high altitudes.
The ECWCS, produced by DRDO, is an ergonomically designed modular technical clothing with increased thermal insulation and physiological comfort based on the insulation necessary in Himalayan regions during various degrees of physical activity under various ambient climatic conditions.
According to the Ministry of Defence of India, the three-layered ECWCS is designed to provide thermal insulation throughout a temperature range of +15 to -50° Celsius with various layer combinations and physical task intensity.
Given the vast range of weather conditions in the Himalayan peaks, the garment has the advantage of requiring fewer combinations to fulfil the requisite insulation or IREQ for the prevailing climatic conditions, making it a viable import alternative for the Indian Army.
Dr. G Satheesh Reddy, Chairman, DRDO, spoke at the event and emphasised the importance of creating an indigenous industrial base for SCME items, not only to meet the Army's current needs but also to leverage its export potential.
Kusumgar Corporates Pvt. Ltd., based in Gujarat, was one of the DRDO's chosen companies, and the company expressed its gratitude on its LinkedIn page, saying, "We are excited and proud to receive the "Transfer of Technology" for ECWCS (Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System) from DRDO under the Make in India initiative."
This would eventually replace the import of garment systems for our Indian Army soldiers who are stationed in extremely high-altitude areas."
