20th September 2021, Mumbai

Kitex Group, a Kerala-based garment company, has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Telangana state government to develop two big projects worth Rs 2,400 crore ($326 million).

The two manufacturing plants would be built in the districts of Warangal and Ranga Reddy. Around 22,000 people in the state are projected to be employed as a result of the investment.

“We want to help the state in realizing its objective of building a world-class ecosystem in textile and apparel manufacturing in Telangana with a focus on creating many jobs,” Kitex managing director Sabu Jacob said in a statement.

“In addition, we will assist the state in improving the quality of cotton grown here by promoting and encouraging the use of better and mechanized technology in land development, cotton cultivation, harvesting, ginning, and storage, thereby assisting Telangana farmers in realizing fair cotton prices,” he added.

Kitex chose to withdraw its planned investment in its home state of Kerala a few months ago, claiming harassment by politicians and government officials as a reason.

Kitex Garments is a prominent maker of children's clothing that also provides contract manufacturing services to private labels such as Jockey, Carter, Babies R Us, Gerber, and Mothercare.
