Fabindia: A Brand of Bharat nurturing artisans across India

Fabindia is a consumer lifestyle platform with an established 62-year legacy focused on authentic, sustainable, and Indian traditional lifestyle products. Fabindia has empowered over 50,000 artisans with approximately 64% of women artisans who are demonstrating a pathway to empowerment to others in their communities.

The company also works with over 2,200 farmers directly and over 10,300 farmers through associates to create sustainable agricultural practices. Fabindia was recently conferred with the Best of Bharat Award at the inaugural edition of e4m 'Pride of India Brands - The Best of Bharat' Conference and Awards 2022.

The inaugural edition of the awards was held in Mumbai, to celebrate and honour entrepreneurs who built brands in Bharat for Bharat.

The brands were recognized and celebrated for setting new standards of innovation and excellence in their products, processes, and marketing practices 

For over 62 years, the company has worked to create markets and sustained livelihood opportunities for artisan communities across India.

In 2011, Fabindia started a micro-entrepreneurial project for women in Khurrampur, Sharanpur, and Karonda, the three villages in the state of Uttar Pradesh. As part of the project, women artisans were trained to earn a better livelihood using traditional craft skills.

The program eventually created livelihoods for 152 women directly and approximately 760 women indirectly. Over time, the upskilled women artisans transitioned from weaving to stitching and developing other products and broadened their income streams.

The success of this project spurred Fabindia to start the Craft Cluster Development and Livelihood Impact (CDLI) program as a more intensive form of capacity building and livelihood creation for artisans in 2016.

BGMEA x CNN to promote Bangladesh's RMG sector globally

28 April 2022, Mumbai:

BGMEA has entered into a partnership with US-based CNN International Commercial (CNNIC) to promote ‘Made in Bangladesh’ by showcasing Bangladesh’s success and potential in the international arena.

Through this partnership, BGMEA will collaborate with CNN to sketch the stories of how the garment industry has been driving Bangladesh forward and contributing to building a more prosperous future for the country.

CNN will showcase the compelling stories of the RMG sector of Bangladesh, especially its strides in the areas of workplace safety, environmental sustainability, and workers’ wellbeing.

The industry’s moves in enhancing competitiveness through innovation, diversification, technology upgrading, and up-skilling will be also highlighted.

In this regard, BGMEA signed a memorandum of understating with CNNIC’s local representative Spellbound Communications Limited.

BGMEA x CNN to promote Bangladesh's RMG sector globally

9 years since Rana Plaza, IKEA & Levi's are free-riding on efforts to make factories safe

Nine years ago, on 24 April 2013, the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh collapsed, killing 1,138 people and exposing the incredibly unsafe labour conditions for factory workers in the garment sector.

Today our thoughts are with all those that had to live through this terrible, preventable tragedy, as well as with the families of those who did not survive. Nine years on, the struggle for safe factories continues, as some major garment and textile brands still continue to refuse to put their workers’ safety first.

The Clean Clothes Campaign network marks this day by calling upon all companies that have not yet done so to sign the International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Sector.

Several widely known brands, such as Levi’s and IKEA, have over the past nine years refused to join the safety mechanism that was created in response to the collapse.

This programme is now in its third iteration as the International Accord. 171 brands sourcing from Bangladesh have signed this agreement, including fast fashion giants like H&M, Inditex (Zara), and Fast Retailing (UNIQLO).

By refusing to join and pay into the programme, but still sourcing from the factories that are being improved by this programme, Levi’s and IKEA are freeriding on the efforts of these other brands.

Our research into these factories shows how both brands have been profiting from progress made possible by the programme that they have failed to support both financially and politically.

In one factory, where IKEA had been present since 2007, the first inspection since the Rana Plaza collapse showed how many safety violations had been overlooked by IKEA’s internal system. This included a lack of fire-rated doors, the presence of locks on some of the exit doors, as well as cracks in the walls.

Even though the 2008 version of IKEA’s monitoring programme explicitly identified faulty electrical wiring as a health and safety risk to be avoided, the 2014 inspection identified lacking insulation of electrical wires.

Many of these issues were resolved in the years after, without IKEA contributing to the programme leading on this progress.

AEPC, Narendra Goenka: Launched several initiatives to promote brand India

Narendra Goenka, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) said, the council has launched several initiatives to promote the brand India on various global platforms by showcasing its strength in sustainability, ethical sourcing, and manufacturing, labor standards, and women's employment.

The council organized a two-day Fashion Meet Expo 2022 to bring together the entire textile ecosystem from fiber to fashion including manufacturers, accessories players, dyes, machine makers, startups, designers, buying agents, exporters, and fashion institutes.

The fair was inaugurated by Darshana Jardosh, Minister of State for Textiles at Apparel House Gurugram on April 21.

India’s RMG exports increased by 30.4 percent to $16 billion from 2021-to 22.

Faruque Hassan made remarks while speaking at an Iftar Mahfil organized by BGMEA for the journalists working in the print, electronic and online media at Dhaka Club on April 8.

HKRITA: Garment-to-Garment Recycling System Wins Two Prestigious International Design Awards

The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA)’s a critically acclaimed project, the Garment-to-Garment Recycling System (G2G) has swept up two more prestigious international design awards: the Gold Award of the iF Design Award 2022 in the Retail/Sales category in mid-April and the Good Design Awards 2021 (Retail Fitting) of The Chicago Athenaeum in December 2021.

The iF Design Award is one of the most prestigious design awards in Germany and this year attracted nearly 11,000 submissions from all over the world to this highly respected competition.

Of the many submissions, only 73 finally obtained a Gold Award. To achieve this level of recognition, a submission must excel in terms of conceptualisation, form, function, differentiation, and impact.

G2G’s zero water use was commended as a sustainable upcycling solution.

“This ingenious system opens up the prospect of ad-hoc and on-site-recycling systems in a variety of locations,” the jury noted. The G2G also won the Good Design Awards 2021 in the Retail Fitting category.

Organised by The Chicago Athenaeum, an International Museum of Architecture and Design, this competition received over 1,100 submissions from more than 50 nations.
