Prada faces criticism for latest sandal design resembling Kolhapuri slippers

30 June, Mumbai 2025

Luxury fashion house Prada is facing criticism for its latest sandal design, which bears a striking resemblance to India's traditional Kolhapuri slippers. Debuted at Milan Fashion Week, the open-toe design has ignited controversy among Indian politicians and artisans who are upset about the lack of attribution to the original creators.

Lorenzo Bertelli, Head-Corporate Social Responsibility, Prada' addressed the uproar by acknowledging the sandals' inspiration from Indian heritage. In a letter to the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, which represents Kolhapuri sandal artisans, Bertelli expressed a willingness to engage in meaningful collaboration with Indian artisans.

Despite pricing their sandals at a hefty $844 - compared to around $12 for a typical Kolhapuri -Prada has indicated an interest in celebrating global craftsmanship, particularly amidst India's rapidly expanding luxury market. As these traditional crafts gain international attention, some local artisans are reportedly finding satisfaction in this newfound recognition, even amid the controversy.
