Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail in partnership with Galeries Lafayette will open luxury department stores in Mumbai and New Delhi.

The aim is to combine Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail’s deep and nuanced understanding of the Indian landscape on the back of its portfolio of designer brands with Galeries Lafayette’s global experience and create a world-class destination for Indian consumers and global luxury brands.

The partnership with Galeries Lafayette is seen as an endorsement of India’s significance as a global luxury market and a future engine of growth for luxury brands.These stores will bring more than 200 luxury and designer brands under one roof. The 90,000 sqft flagship store in Mumbai is expected to be operational by 2024 and will be housed across a building currently being designed by the architectural firm Virgile & Partners, which has worked extensively on storied department stores globally. The 65,000 sqft store in Delhi, expected to be operational in 2025, will be at a luxury mall.

Galeries Lafayette is known globally for its flagship store in Paris. The French department store giant has 65 stores globally. Aditya Birla’s portfolio includes Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly, Peter England and fashion retailer Pantaloons.

For Arrow formal wear contributes the highest followed by the sports range. The brand is trying to be more contemporary in the post-Covid scenario and has been growing this year above the pre-pandemic level. Diwali 2022 grew by double digits when compared to the 2021 and was much higher when compared to 2019 and 2020.

Currently the brand’s expansion is focused on mostly Tier II cities. Tier III presence is through two channels – multi-brand outlets and online efforts. The brand is investing money in larger stores in either metro or Tier I markets since that’s where growth is happening.

The sales contribution of online channels was at 11 per cent in 2018. Now it is around 17 per cent but doesn’t include omni-channel contribution. Omni-channel is upwards of eight per cent to nine percent and the endeavour is to push it to 12 per cent to 15 per cent.

Arrow has been in India since 1993 and apart from premium formal shirts has offerings across Arrow Sport, Arrow New York, Arrow Woman, and products from denim to sweatshirts to jackets to T-shirts to suits to accessories.

Rupa plans to open 16 exclusive brand outlets in the next four months. The innerwear and casual wear brand currently has 24 exclusive outlets and it is looking to strengthen its focus on modern trade channels even as it looks to grow turnover.

Modern trade outlets contribute 10 percent to the company’s total topline and have been clocking double-digit growth. Rupa’s expansion strategy continues in the quest to strengthen its retail footprint nationwide. The plan now is to open stores in high-footfall areas.

Rupa’s revenue from operations for the quarter ending September 30, 2022, was down by nearly 22 percent. The earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin stood at 10 percent as compared to 19 percent over the same period last year.

Rupa attributes the decline in EBITDA margin to volatile raw material prices that have impacted the gross margin as well as significant increases in marketing expenses.

The contribution to sales from its high-margin products, such as thermal and athleisure, has been much lower compared to last year. The company believes that as yarn prices look stabilized now demand will also pick up. So the recovery in the third quarter depends on the winter, which is more of a thermal season.

The clothing line is targeted at teens between the ages of 11 and 17 years. Ed-a-Mamma is Alia Bhatt’s children’s wear brand. Ed-a-Mamma plans to enter international markets by launching the brand in the UAE and Europe next year.
