Retailers register 25% rise in Independence Day sales

Indian apparel and lifestyle retailers recorded a robust sales expansion of up to 25 per cent in value during the recent Independence Day shopping window, successfully breaking a sluggish first-half consumption cycle. Unlike previous years plagued by aggressive markdowns, organized brick-and-mortar chains capped seasonal discounts at roughly 50 per cent. According to Devrajan Iyer, CEO, Lifestyle International, the double-digit revenue growth was fundamentally powered by a 5 to 7 per cent rise in genuine unit volumes and higher footfalls across high-street stores rather than inflated billing values.

Capturing multi-channel demand and new geographies

E-commerce enablement platforms reported a 30 per cent Y-o-Y jump in gross merchandise value, with fashion and apparel emerging as the dominant category by order volume. Market analysts note that tier-iii and tier-I cities accounted for a substantial portion of the volume recovery, signaling deep structural consumption shifts beyond metropolitan centers. Retailers maintaining unified inventory systems across digital marketplaces and physical outlets captured higher conversion rates, minimizing the margin erosion typically associated with cross-channel pricing mismatches.

Leveraging festivals to drive sustainable profitability

The Indian organized retail and apparel sector encompasses department stores, digital marketplaces, and specialty clothing brands catering to expanding domestic consumption. Focusing on omnichannel integration, optimized inventory velocity, and localized supply chains, the industry continues to leverage key festive windows like Independence Day to drive sustainable profitability and volume-led expansion.
